The XXIV edition<\/strong> of the Zaragoza Tapas Competition saw 168 culinary creations<\/strong> competing to win the title of the best tapa in the region.<\/p>\n

A City Devoted to Tapas for 10 Days<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For ten intense days<\/strong>, from November 8 to 18, the streets of Zaragoza and its province<\/strong> were transformed into an open-air gastronomic festival<\/strong>. Visitors and locals alike had the opportunity to taste an extraordinary variety of tapas<\/strong>, ranging from avant-garde creations to traditional delights<\/strong>, all celebrating the rich culinary heritage<\/strong> of the region.<\/p>\n

This event, organized by Caf\u00e9s y Bares de Zaragoza<\/strong>, holds a special place in Spanish culinary history<\/strong> as the oldest tapas competition in Spain<\/strong>. As Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Marteles Gracia<\/strong>, President of the organization, pointed out, the competition is not just about gastronomy<\/strong>; it also emphasizes the economic impact of the hospitality sector, its social role, and its potential as a tourist attraction<\/strong>, adding tremendous value to the city and province of Zaragoza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With an estimated 60,000 tapas served<\/strong>, the competition was a resounding success. However, only 16 tapas<\/strong> made it to the final round after rigorous judging. On November 27<\/strong>, after an intense deliberation, “Tataki Baturro” from Casa y Tinelo<\/strong> was crowned the best tapa of Zaragoza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

An Unparalleled Opportunity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Organizing a city-wide gastronomic event of this scale is no easy task<\/strong>. It requires patience, dedication, and meticulous planning<\/strong>\u2014values that define the essence of this competition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To ensure fairness and creativity<\/strong>, the competition is divided into three categories<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Aragonese Tapa<\/strong> \u2013 Highlighting local products from Arag\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. Mediterranean Tapa<\/strong> \u2013 Representing Mediterranean cuisine<\/strong> and its cooking techniques.<\/li>\n
  3. Original Tapa<\/strong> \u2013 Where innovation and creativity<\/strong> take center stage.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Finding a common framework<\/strong> that accommodates different establishments<\/strong>\u2014from local taverns to fine dining restaurants\u2014is a challenge. However, as Marteles explains<\/strong>, the competition constantly evolves to adapt to the diverse needs<\/strong> of participants.<\/p>\n

    This XXIV edition<\/strong> saw the highest level of participation in recent years<\/strong>, with 113 establishments<\/strong> competing, marking a 33% increase compared to the previous edition in 2017<\/strong>. A remarkable 46% of this year\u2019s competitors<\/strong> participated for the first time<\/strong>, proving the enduring appeal and relevance<\/strong> of the event.<\/p>\n

    The Oldest Tapas Competition in Spain<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    “We proudly claim the title of Spain\u2019s oldest official tapas competition<\/strong>, as it has been continuously organized<\/strong> by the same professional association<\/strong> since its inception,” states Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Marteles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Zaragoza has long recognized gastronomy as a key strategic asset<\/strong>, and events like this one<\/strong> help reinforce the city\u2019s status as a culinary destination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    According to Marteles<\/strong>, two key trends<\/strong> emerged in this year’s competition:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • “Trampantojo” tapas<\/strong> \u2013 Deceptive creations that look like one thing but taste like something completely different<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Canelones (Cannelloni)<\/strong> \u2013 A traditional dish reimagined in innovative ways<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Although this edition is now in the books<\/strong>, anticipation is already building for next year\u2019s event<\/strong>. Looking ahead to 2025<\/strong>, which marks the XXV edition<\/strong>, one of the main objectives will be expanding participation across the province<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
