A Family-Owned Winery with Deep Roots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Bodega y Vi\u00f1edos Mart\u00edn Verdugo<\/strong> was founded 34 years ago<\/strong> by Josefina Mart\u00edn Verdugo<\/strong>. The winery was established on rocky land where nothing seemed to grow<\/strong>, yet the family planted vineyards in the 1990s<\/strong> and built the winery in 2000<\/strong>. Since then, they have continuously reinvested<\/strong> in improving their winemaking processes and expanding their expertise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Overcoming Challenges with Resilience<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the most significant challenges<\/strong> the winery faced was a devastating fire in 2013<\/strong>, which completely destroyed the facility<\/strong>. Instead of giving up, the D\u00edez family saw this as an opportunity to rebuild and improve<\/strong>. They implemented a gravity-fed winemaking system<\/strong>, eliminating the need for pumps, which preserves the quality of the wine<\/strong>. This method ensures a gentler extraction of tannins<\/strong>, resulting in softer and smoother wines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Innovation in Winemaking<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After the fire<\/strong>, the winery shifted toward more sustainable and natural<\/strong> winemaking techniques. Since 2015<\/strong>, they have managed their vineyards organically<\/strong>, achieving certification in 2017<\/strong>. This change has not only reduced the use of chemical treatments<\/strong> but also enhanced grape quality<\/strong>, resulting in richer, more aromatic wines<\/strong>. Antonio explained that when vines are well-balanced and properly nourished<\/strong>, they produce grapes with higher concentration<\/strong> of flavors and aromas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Value of Terroir and Climate<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The winery’s location in Ribera del Duero<\/strong>, at 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level<\/strong>, provides an ideal climate<\/strong> for growing grapes. The drastic temperature variations between day and night<\/strong> help develop thicker grape skins<\/strong>, where aromas and colors are concentrated<\/strong>. This results in wines with naturally intense structure and body<\/strong>, a signature characteristic<\/strong> of Ribera del Duero wines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
