Madrid and Dublin, Epicenters of the Launch of World Tapas Day 2024, with Events Highlighting the Cultural and Economic Importance of Tapas

Today, the presentation of World Tapas Day 2024 was held in Madrid, a flagship event for Spanish gastronomy. The ceremony took place at 11:00 AM at Bareto, located at Calle de Alcalá 55, and featured the participation of key figures from the sector.

Key Speeches

Rosario Sánchez Grau, Secretary of State for Tourism, emphasized the tapa as a cultural element that transcends borders and symbolizes Spain’s hospitality and creativity.
“World Tapas Day not only celebrates our gastronomy but also promotes Spanish tourism and culture worldwide. Tapas serve as an entryway for visitors to discover the richness and diversity of our culinary traditions.”

Susi Díaz, President of Saborea España, highlighted the role of tapas in promoting Spanish cuisine both nationally and internationally.
“Tapas are a symbol of our gastronomic culture. Through Saborea España, we are committed to showcasing this tradition and fostering global appreciation for it. This year, our participation in Taste of Dublin is a unique opportunity to share the tapas experience with an international audience.”

Beatriz Cecilia, Director of Hospitality Projects at Hostelería de España, presented the study “The Importance of Tapas in Our Culture”, revealing key insights into the impact of tapas on the Spanish hospitality sector.
“Our study shows that tapas culture, a unique way of socializing found only in our country, is thriving—46% of hospitality professionals report an increase in recent years. Additionally, the classic tapas-and-beer pairing remains the preferred choice for both locals and foreign visitors, reaffirming its central role in our gastronomic offering.”

Following the speeches, attendees enjoyed a tasting cocktail featuring Spain’s favorite tapas, celebrating the richness and diversity of this culinary tradition.

Social Media Campaign and International Presentation

Saborea España has also launched a powerful social media campaign to promote tapas culture. This initiative includes an international presentation at the Taste of Dublin event, taking place from June 13 to 16. A delegation from Saborea España, representing four key destinations—Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Cambrils, and Gran Canaria— will travel to Dublin to promote tapas culture among attendees.

The participation in Taste of Dublin aims not only to attract Irish visitors to Spanish gastronomy but also to build connections with chefs, food critics, and culinary enthusiasts from around the world. During the event, Saborea España representatives will offer:

  • Tastings of both traditional and modern tapas.
  • Presentations on the history and evolution of tapas.
  • Interactive workshops where visitors can learn how to prepare their own tapas.

Global Reach

Turespaña has joined the campaign by promoting World Tapas Day through its Tourism Offices worldwide. This collaboration will ensure global exposure, positioning tapas as an icon of Spanish gastronomy and culture.

Tourism Offices in cities such as London, New York, Tokyo, and Sydney will organize events and activities to celebrate the day, promoting tapas as a unique culinary experience that brings people from different cultures together.
