El Desarme Returns to Oviedo to Delight the Most Demanding Palates

Everything is set for a new edition of Spain’s oldest gastronomic festival and one of the most important events of Oviedo’s year as Spain’s Gastronomic Capital 2024.

This event is a must for food lovers, commemorating how, in 1836, the people of Oviedo won a battle with a spoon as their most powerful weapon.

This year, El Desarme will take place from October 17 to 27, featuring 69 restaurants and four hotels across the city.

El Desarme: More Than Just a Festival

El Desarme in Oviedo is not just a celebration—it is one of the cornerstone events of a landmark year for the city as Spain’s Gastronomic Capital 2024. This prestigious title recognizes the Asturians’ deep passion for food, the excellence of Oviedo’s chefs and products, and the rich cultural traditions that make gastronomy a way of life in the region.

A Feast with a Historic Legacy

El Desarme is rooted in history, celebrating what is known as “The Disarmament Menu” or “The Peace Menu”.

Although various legends surround the events of October 19, 1836, it is widely agreed that, after a fierce battle between the Isabelinos (Oviedo locals) and the Carlists (their adversaries), the conflict ended with a shared three-course meal that remains unchanged to this day:

  • Chickpeas with cod and spinach
  • Oviedo-style tripe
  • Rice pudding

This tradition began as a local festivity but has grown in popularity and prestige, largely due to the efforts of the Cofradía del Desarme. This organization has worked tirelessly to promote and preserve the historic menu and the festival’s unique character.

A Festival That Grows Every Year

What started as a one-day feast has expanded into a 10-day celebration, thanks to the support of the Oviedo City Council, the Cofradía del Desarme, and the Asturias Hospitality Association (OTEA).

In 2024, El Desarme will run from October 17 to 27, offering more than just exceptional dining experiences. The event will also feature:

  • A historic battle reenactment (October 19-20)
  • Cultural activities and food-related talks
  • The Grand Chapter of the Cofradía del Desarme (October 26)
  • A traditional market showcasing Spain’s gastronomic brotherhoods (October 27)

This edition also coincides with the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony (October 26), adding to Oviedo’s rich cultural calendar.
